Probably the most requested Film Top 5 of all: the five highest grossing movies ever made and released: in the last decade with the Superhero era people definitely came back to watch movies in the theater changing every year this Top 5. Let’s see …
5. Avengers: Infinity War – $2.05 billion
Marvel had a long term master-plan and it worked … hell if it worked: releasing a number of stand alone superhero movies (one or more each Avenger) building up the buzz (and the cash flow) for the release of the Avengers franchise where all the main character were set together in the same group of movies. The plan paid, and is still paying, off big times making all the Avenger movies in the Top 20 highest grossing movies ever made and Infinity War, released in 2018) break the Top 5 earning $2.05 billion.
4. Star Wars: The Force Awakens – $2.07 billion
The original Star War trilogy is a mile stone in the movie industry until George Lucas decided to write and direct the prequel trilogy and a huge amount of spin-off books, video games and so on so forth. The franchise kinda lost credibility until Disney bought it from Lucas with big plans: giving a set of proper sequels to the original Star Wars universe with the participation of the original actors, well established directors and new talents and, as add on, releasing also spin off episodes (Star Wars Stories) to better explain the previous plot holes and the background of the main characters. The first episode of the Disney era is so far also the most successful: The Force Awakens was an overall success, consolidated the already well known qualities of J.J. Abrams ad a director and ended up to earn $2.07 billion at the box office (without counting the huge merchandising)
3. Titanic (1997) – $2.19 billion
James Cameron in the 90s and 2000s has been hands down the highest grossing director, probably the highest grossing director ever. Film like Terminator, Terminator 2, Titanic and Avatar were not just crazy expensive to be produced at the time, but the hit the charts constantly at the top spot. Titanic, released in 1997 has been for more than 10 years the highest grossing film ever made, to be beaten only by the next movie of Cameron himself. And still today Titanic, grossing $2.19 billion adjusted for inflation, sits at the 3rd spot of the Top 5 highest grossing movies ever.
2. Avatar (2009) – $2.79 billion
Avatar was huge. Whoever that was born before 2000 can’t forget all the buzz for this movie upon release. James Cameron took 10 years to shot Avatar because the right technology wasn’t there yet, and when the movie has been released was a blast breaking every single previous record grossing, adjusted at today’s inflation, $2.79 billion at the box office only … not to mention that the film has been released several more times in extended versions and remastered versions. Avatar literally stayed on the top spot for 10 years … until …
1. Avengers: Endgame (2019) – $2.796 billion
… until the last Avengers movie came out: Endgame! This film marks the end of the “Q1” of the Avengers and it is the last one where the most iconic characters are part of. The media campaign prior release, the huge buzz around the movie and the almost immediate post release of the film with extra cuts made Avengers: Endgame to break the top chart of the Top 5 highest grossing movies ever made just for a tiny bit grossing so far $2.796 billion world-wide … but the game is still on!
